Staying Active
Last week, our Grade 8 students took a short period of time to get up out of their desk and get exercise in a not only fun, but educating way. Our staff member, Mr. Mahaney deciding to take his class out on a nature walk and have a boil up in the woods. The students had an absolute blast enjoying the fresh air and learning how to build a fire!! Here are some pictures of the outdoor adventure.

Floor Hockey
Floor Hockey has not always been a school sport here at Greenwood Academy, however, recently we have had a number of our students come to us asking if we would be interested in letting them create a team and become their coaches. With the high interest levels, it was impossible to say no. The grade 7, 8, & 9 boys have been practicing every monday and wednesday after school and been very dedicated in this activity. Recently, we travelled to Lewisporte Academy to compete in the U15 regional floor hockey tournament and came out on top with the gold medal! Way to go Panthers, always making our school proud with such dedication and excellent behaviour!!
Volleyball
The volleyball program here at Greenwood Academy has seen a significant jump this year with girls from Grades 5-9 wanting to become a part of a growing sport within the central area. Our coaches, Ambrose Cross, Jody Cosh and I have put a lot of time into developing what has become a talented group of players. This year, plans are to have a Grade 5-6 team, a Grade 7 team, as well as a junior high team consisting of Grade 8 and 9 players. The teams have been practicing twice a week since school resumed and have been sharpening their skipped for fall as they have a number of tournamnets that they are registered to attend. Cosh is impressed with the interest that has been shown at the school for the sport of volleyball. Most of the interest is coming from the girls and hockey has been the dominant sport for the boys. In the coming weeks Newfoundland and Labrador Volleyball Association instructed Bruce Andrews will be making the trip to Greenwood Academy to conduct some clinics on skill development with the players based on four stages. At the end of the fourth stage, the players should have a better knowledge of the game and should have their skills further developed. It will be a busy fall for the Greenwood girls as they will play in the Volley-fest tournament in St.John's on October 30th and 31st as well as volley central tournament scheduled for November 6th and 7th. They will then clue up a busy ,onto by participating in then 15-Under tournament in Grand falls-Windsor on November 20th and 21st. Greenwood will also get their taste of hosting an event as the will be inviting team to their pre-bantam provincial tournament in March.

Basketball
Our teams have had a very successful year to date. They've gone to a number of tournaments and games, and they've done a fantastic job of representing our school. A special congratulations going out to the grade 6 & 7 girls who brought back the gold medal, the grade 9 boys who brought back the silver medal. To get students ready for basketball, Ms.Peckford and Mr.Patterson have been holding running practices with students on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. The students get faster every time they run! They run laps of the school, and their times are recorded to measure their improvement. Practices will continue for the next three weeks at regular times to prepare for the provincial tournament. However, if a cancellation occurs, I will post updates on this blog. Check out some pictures from previous tournaments!
